Dr. Tambra O. Jackson is the Dean of the School of Education at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis and Professor of Urban Teacher Education. She is also affiliated faculty in the Africana Studies program. Dr. Jackson considers herself a scholar-activist and is committed to social justice issues pertaining to the historical and contemporary oppression, miseducation, and liberation of children of Color in U.S. schools. Dr. Jackson has contributed nationally and locally to the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools. Her research on Freedom Schools is pioneering in the field of teacher education. She has published on how teacher education can learn from and build upon the work of the CDF Freedom Schools model for teacher learning and the ways in which the program offers a liberatory space for children of color. Dr. Jackson is the editor of the book, Black Mother Educators: Advancing Praxis for Access, Equity and Achievement. She is also the Principal Investigator for current grant projects focused on (1) professional learning for teachers and school leaders that center “Education for Liberation” as a means of radical transformation for creating equitable schools and (2) the intersection of teacher education and ethnic studies for recruiting teachers of color. As dean, Dr. Jackson has improved alumni engagement, increased donor giving, and increased the profile of the school as a leader in equity and social justice education on campus and around the state through community engagement. She is a board member for the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. Dr. Jackson received her Ph.D. in curriculum, teaching, and educational policy from Michigan State University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a bachelor’s degree from Miami University (Ohio).
