Dr. Prentice Chandler is the dean of Austin Peay State University’s Eriksson College of Education in Clarksville, TN. A noted scholar of history and social studies education, academic freedom, authentic intellectual work and higher education leadership, Chandler has authored or coauthored approximately 50 works. Under Chandler’s leadership, the Eriksson College of Education has emerged as a national leader in teacher preparation and addressing teacher shortages. The Austin Peay State University and Clarksville-Montgomery County School System Teacher Residency program became the first federally-registered apprenticeship program for teaching in January 2022. During this accelerated three-year program, teacher residents attend school for free and work in paid positions in participating school districts. Since launching in 2019, the residency program has expanded to include partnerships with local community colleges and rural school districts. The residency program has been featured in multiple national media outlets, including The Washington Post, CBS News and Education Week.
