Dr. Leona Calkins is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at CSU, Stanislaus, teaching in their Single Subject (Secondary) Credential Program. Dr. Calkins earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Teacher Education and specializes in social science education. Prior to this, Dr. Calkins taught high school social social science and was a high school librarian for 14 years in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. Calkins currently teaches general methods courses, multilingual education in secondary classrooms, and content-area literacy. Dr. Calkins has a broad range of research interests including social science teacher domain-specific self-efficacy, understanding the extent to which diverse perspectives, including LGBTQ+ perspectives, are incorporated into secondary social science classrooms, teacher burnout, especially that of preservice and novice teachers, and teacher leadership.
