Associate Director, Urban Teaching Residency Program

Dr. Jennifer Valerio is the Associate Director of the Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) Program. In addition to this leadership role, Dr. Valerio also teaches math methods courses at the elementary and secondary levels for UTR and is an instructor in the MidCareer Doctoral Program and Learning, Teaching, and Literacy Program at Penn GSE, drawing on two decades of experience as a K-12 math teacher and her expertise in curriculum design.
Dr. Valerio recently received her doctorate in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and her research has focused on combining practice-based approaches to professional development and collaborative lesson design in order to foster responsive math teaching. During her doctoral studies, Dr. Valerio provided professional development for K-8 teachers in the School District of Philadelphia and served as a research assistant in the Responsive Math Teaching Project.
Dr. Valerio started her career as a K-12 math teacher in 1995 and most recently taught in Garnet Valley School District where she also served as a math coordinator.
