Anabel Garza is a Leadership Training and Support Specialist at the Texas Center for Educator Excellence in Austin, Texas. Anabel joined TxCEE, after working as a School Improvement Specialist at the Texas Education Agency. Before working for TEA, Anabel was a school Principal, last serving in the Austin Independent School District in Texas. Her work in school transformation has been spotlighted in several publications and articles including Phi Delta Kappan, Texas Monthly, Latina Magazine, Austin Women’s Magazine, The Chronicle, The Washington Post and New York Times. The work done to transform a longtime struggling school was featured in the book, “Saving the School”, by Micheal Brick.
She was the founding Principal of the International High School in Austin ISD, collaborating with Brooklyn International and The International High School at La Guardia Community College in New York to implement the latest strategies in language development for language learners. The work done with first generation immigrant students is detailed in, “Care and Advocacy: Narratives from a School of Immigrant Youth”. Anabel believes in the power of professional dialog amongst members of learning communities for teacher development and powerful calibration data to improve instruction and student learning. Anabel holds a master’s degree in Educational Mid-Management from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Science from The University of Texas. She currently lives in the hill country in Texas where she enjoys boating and painting.
