edPIRATE Associate Director of Teacher Residency

Shawnda Cherry is the edPIRATE Associate Director for Teacher Residency in the Rural Education Institute at East Carolina University. She is also, currently a doctoral student and Holmes Scholar at North Carolina State University. She has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Middle Grades Education and Masters in School Administration and Instructional Specialist from East Carolina University. She is a career educator of 28 years with a wide range of experience spanning elementary, middle, high school and alternative settings serving as teacher, assistant principal, principal and executive director. She has a passion for advocating for the underserved communities, especially those located in northeastern NC. Her research interests include culturally responsive education, rural education and equity centered pedagogy.
