Dr. Leslie Gates is Professor of Art Education at Millersville University, where she coordinates the undergraduate and graduate programs in art education. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland College Park. Her research interests are art educator's professional learning and assessment in the arts. Her research has been published in Studies in Art Education, Visual Arts Research, Art Education, and Book 2.0. In 2017, Leslie was named the Pennsylvania Art Educator of the Year. She is also a practicing artist whose artist books and text-based sculptures deal with a range of issues related to sacred objects. Her work, which often explores the question of how something is rendered sacred, asks the viewer to consider the sacred in everyday experiences.
