Dr. Cuenca-Carlino serves as the Chairperson of the Department of Special Education at Illinois State University (ISU). She has taught courses on assessment, literacy, and evidence-based practices in special education to undergraduate and graduate students. In her research, Cuenca-Carlino studies the development of writing skills and how students with disabilities can use persuasion to advocate for their needs. She also studies strategy instruction in relation to writing and reading interventions for students who are English learners/bilingual and has collaborated in studies on special education teacher preparation programs. She has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations at national and international venues related to her scholarship. Prior to this Chairperson position, she served for a little over three years, as the Assistant Vice President for Faculty Development, Diversity, and Learning in the Office of the Provost at ISU. She received her Ph.D. in Special Education and her Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and her undergraduate degree in special education from Universidad de Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras.
