Since 2006, Sonia has been a teacher educator, working in graduate and undergraduate teacher education and school leadership programs in six different universities. With a background as a secondary English and Social studies teacher and a Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership, she has taught courses on qualitative research methods, practitioner research, urban education, education policy, social and cultural foundations of education, diversity and inclusion, English and Social Studies methods, curriculum foundations, and youth activism. She draws on her research on youth and teacher activism to develop organizational cultures that prefigure the just world to which we collectively aspire. She has published articles in the American Educational Research Journal, the Journal of Community Psychology, the International Journal of Leadership in Education, and the National Society for the Study of Education Yearbook, among others. She is also the co-editor of Contemporary Youth Activism: Advancing Social Justice in the United States (2016).
