Doctoral Student
Texas Woman's University
My name is Mayra Alejandra Chavez; I am a sister, daughter, friend, child of God, student, servant leader as well as a cheerful Kindergarten teacher. When I was 15 years old, my mother decided to move to the United States to reunite my brothers and me with our father. I am the eldest of three and I believe I grew up in a somewhat traditional Mexican family, being the only girl, I was always surrounded by family, friends, and a supportive community. As I started my school life in the United States, I met a wonderful mentor, Dr. Kim Kamin. She is the person that guided, and nurtured me into the individual educator I am today; she was like a mother. Dr. Kamin, being an inspiration, always encouraged me to do my best regardless of what other people would say about me. I attended Texas Woman’s University where I completed both my Bachelor's and Master’s in Education and I’m currently working towards my Ph.D. in Child Development and Early Education. This proves that life, for an individual, is not about what people say, but it is about what we make for ourselves. For me, it was the strength to rise above my circumstances and accomplish what seemed impossible. In my life’s journey, education has always been a significant aspect because not only has it given me the opportunity to gain a vast amount of knowledge, it has changed my economic and social identity.
