Sara K. Sterner is an assistant professor at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt (formerly Humboldt State University) in the School of Education and serves as the Liberal Studies Elementary Education Program Leader, working with undergraduate preservice educators and credential candidates. Additionally, she works closely with first year education students in a place-based learning community, Educators for Social Justice. Sara serves on the Children’s Literature Assembly (NCTE) board and as a research associate on a DHSI grant supporting education students and initiatives at Cal Poly Humboldt.
Sara earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy Education from the University of Minnesota in 2019. She is a teacher educator and qualitative researcher using post-intentional phenomenology, arts-based research, and narrative inquiry practices. Her research interests include preservice teacher development, the promotion of inclusive children’s and adolescent literature, and disrupting white supremacy in education through anti-bias pedagogies and white teacher identity studies. Sara's scholarship stems from her experience as an elementary educator, passion for literacy education, and commitment to create equity in education.
