PhD Graduate Student
University of Colorado Denver
Mr. Andrew Dutch, PhD graduate student and music educator, is currently in his third year of teaching at Fort Collins High School where he serves as the Associate Director of Bands. He graduated from Colorado State University in 2021 with his Bachelors Degree and Eastern Washington University in 2023 with his Masters Degree, both, in Music Education. He is a former student of Dr. Erik Johnson and Dr. Sheila C. Woodward. As of the Fall 2023, Andrew is currently working on his PhD in Education and Human Development (Critical Studies Concentration) with the University of Colorado Denver under the academic advisement of Dr. Robin Brandehoff.
Since beginning at FCHS, Andrew has helped to raised the musicianship across the band program, earning excellent and superior ratings at festivals and competitions with all ensembles including a debut performance of their freshmen ensemble at the 2023 CBA Regional Festival. Numbers across the program have grown from his contributions and work alongside the entire esteemed FCHS Performing Arts department with specific efforts towards the modernization and increase of accessibility of music coursework both traditional and alternative, ensemble and non-ensemble. He is currently working with the Director of Orchestras, Mr. John G. Hermanson, on piloting music-concentrated Career and Technical Education coursework at FCHS through collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education – marking FCHS one of the first in the state to do so.
As an academic, Andrew is a burgeoning researcher and presenter having showcased his work at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference, the Washington Music Educators Association Conference, and internationally in a doctoral workshop with the International Society for the Philosophy of Music Education in Oslo, Norway. His work centers on issues related to power and power dynamics both in the philosophical sense as well as their applied implication within the classroom. He is also academically focused on fields of educational philosophy, social and political issues related to education, and approaches to music education that fosters student agency and identity development, among other topics.
Andrew gives his thanks for and love to his supportive students and colleagues: namely David D. Miles, John G. Hermanson, Joseph Perron, Andraya Perron, Jason Tyler, and the amazing FCHS band students.
