Dr. Debra Burson is an experienced educator with over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience. She taught at the elementary level, served as a lead teacher, and chaired faculty leadership teams to spearhead professional development initiatives. During her time in elementary education, Dr. Burson collaborated with colleagues in higher education on literacy-based research and mentoring of pre-service teachers. She transitioned to teaching in higher education joining Millsaps College as a professor of early literacy and instructional design. While at Millsaps, she led the department through the early adoption of the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) standards earning national accreditation and held statewide roles with the Mississippi Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) and the Mississippi Higher Education Literacy Council (HELC). In 2017, Dr. Burson joined the Mississippi Department of Education as the State Director for Educator Preparation, responsible for Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) programs statewide.
