University of California Los Angeles
Laura C. Chávez-Moreno, Ph.D., is an award-winning researcher and assistant professor at the University of California Los Angeles César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies. She studies how schooling teaches about and makes race, racism, the Latinx racial construct, and Latinidad. She connects these theorizations with questions about educational equity, particularly in the areas of language and literacy. Her research critiques systems of oppression in schooling and supports advancing education for self-determination. Dr. Chávez-Moreno was awarded a 2022 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Most recently the National Council for Teachers of English awarded the 2023 Alan C. Purves Award to her article, “The continuum of racial literacies: Teacher practices countering whitestream bilingual education.” Prof. Chávez-Moreno's book, “How Schools Make Race: Teaching Latinx Racialization in America,” is forthcoming with Harvard Education Press, available winter 2024/2025.
